The guild is sponsoring classes in Woodcarving (Sept – Mary May) and Dovetails (Nov – Bob Van Dyke). These classes are now open to the general public for registration. WWG members should register for these classes via Members Only.
Fundamentals of Woodcarving with Mary May
Class #1, September 17-18, 2022 (Sat/Sun)
Class #2, September 19-20, 2022 (Mon/Tue)
Reston Community Center (RCC)
Join Mary May and learn the basics of classical relief carving using long-handled gouges.
Mary’s class covers the most important fundamentals: how to safely hold carving tools, how to securely clamp workpieces to a workbench, how to sharpen tools, how to properly determine grain direction, and she will share many carving tips and tricks throughout the class. Using a floral-relief example, Mary will show students all the steps from beginning to completing a project.
If you are a beginner, this class will be especially useful. But experienced carvers can benefit too.
The cost for the 2-day class is $250 for non-WWG members, and includes a 12-month WWG membership.
THIS CLASS WAS A BIG SUCCESS. THANK YOU FOR PARTICPATING AND A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO MARY MAY.
There are More than 10 Ways to Cut Dovetails with Bob Van Dyke
November 12-13, 2022 (Sat/Sun) 9am to 5pm
Reston Community Center (RCC)
Bob Van Dyke will teach students different methods to cut dovetails, a basic skill for wood joinery. Students will use the table saw, trim router, bandsaw, and scroll saw, and hand tools to increase both the speed and accuracy of dovetails. No router dovetail jigs will be used, which allows students to better learn and practice the fundamentals.
Since there are many correct ways to cut dovetails, Bob’s instruction won’t promote any particular method. Instead, he will demonstrate a variety of techniques he has developed over many years so you can decide what works best for you for your projects.
The cost for the 2-day class is $275 for non-WWG members, and includes a 12-month WWG membership.
