Reminder: On Wednesday, March 27, from 9 am to 4 pm, Tom McLaughlin will join the Washington Woodworkers Guild and Nova Labs for a full-day presentation, where he will introduce and attempt to simplify the art of fine chairmaking which is considered by most to be the most challenging of woodworking projects. If you’ve yet to experience Tom’s teaching style, you’re in for a treat as he clearly delivers concepts for those at various levels of expertise to understand, with professional skill and a disarming humor. In addition, Tom is always glad to field questions throughout. While he will include inspirational examples from the great designs of the past through slide discussions, there will be plenty of practical examples and demonstrations of the approach and process to making great chairs. The presentation will begin with an explanation of the fundamentals using as an example a classic mortise and tenon Craftsman style chair. Then Tom will show how the principles involved in building this chair extend to the more curvilinear Queen Anne style. Finally, he will explore chairmaking design and construction in the style of one of a modern-day masterpiece, the Hans Wegner Classic (round) Chair.Presentation is $50 for non-members ($40 for members). Location: Nova Labs, Fairfax, VA

Our February presentation will be presented by Austin Englund and is titled “Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest: An Ideal Restoration for an Ideal Villa Retreat”.Thomas Jefferson designed and oversaw the construction of a second home in Bedford County, VA. While the house changed hands over the years, a devastating fire changed the form and function of the home for more than 150 years.Over the past 40 years, archeologists, museum specialists, and restoration craftsmen have researched and restored not only the vision of Jefferson’s retreat home, but also the process and techniques that were originally employed. Austin will be presenting a brief history of the retreat and restoration, followed by a demonstration of how we reproduced mouldings using period hand tools and techniques.
