Bob Van Dyke will be our guest lecturer for a presentation called Ornamentation in 18th Century Furniture on Friday, March 6th at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria. Registration is required. This FREE event is open to WWG members and the public.
Unlike today, furniture in the 18th century was a status symbol and the more highly ornamented the furniture was, the more expensive it became. Consequently, it was a subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) mark of the wealth and prominence of the owner. Ornate carving, intricate veneer work, curved chair arms along with all sorts of inlays played a huge part in increasing the value of the furniture, and thus the status of the owner.
