Presentation

Fred Schock’s presentation for the October 19th meeting will focus on large and small projects he has fashioned to emulate Asian Style design.

It will include a large outdoor fence, pergola and gate combining both Japanese and Chinese elements. On a much smaller scale, he will present a Japanese Kusamono stand as well as a Chinese bowl stand featuring Ming Dynasty joinery.

Other pieces which suggest an Asian style are two tables: one a console table and the other a design that traces its origins to the early 20th century.

Biography

For most of his life, Fred Schock has combined his love of music with that of woodworking. When he took his first clarinet lessons as a teenager, he had already been learning carpentry skills from his father.

Although music became his profession, his passion for woodworking never ceased. After over fifty years of teaching music and performing with symphony orchestras, he retired in 1999 to devote his time to working with wood.

Although his primary interest for years had been focused on making Maloof and Taylor style rocking chairs, he also has been drawn to making pieces which are either suggestive of, influenced by or copies of Asian designs, his topic for this month’s presentation.

Fred is currently in charge of the Bykota Senior Center Workshop in Towson, MD.
